I can't believe school starts again next week. For the first time, I will be attending as a teacher, and not as a student. Although my friends and family assure me that I will do well, my wild imagination is telling me otherwise. Would you like to get a glimpse into that same imagination? If so, read on . . . if you dare.
The excited student teacher wakes up on the first day of school. She looks at her alarm clock and realizes that the power went off during the night. She frantically searches for her watch, and when she finally finds it under the bed, she sees that she has exactly twenty minutes until she must be in the classroom.
The slightly hurried, but nonplussed student teacher quickly grabs her clothes. Her clothes, of course, were ironed and laid out the night before due to her superb organizational skills. (ok, I said I have a wild imagination!) She throws them on, throws her hair up, throws her light off, and walks out the door with exactly ten minutes left.
The happy, incredibly organized student teacher walks to the corner of her short road, where she realizes that she left her book bag in the corner of her spotlessly cleaned room. She turns around, and runs back to the house (in a very dignified manner, of course) to get her book bag. After throwing it onto her shoulder and leaving the house for the second time, she is leaving for school with a total of seven minutes until the beginning of her teaching career.
The forgetful, but otherwise practically perfect in every way (see Mary Poppins for more info on obtaining this state of mind) student teacher makes the five minute walk to the school into a four minute walk, and arrives at the door of the classroom with exactly three minutes to spare. The door is wide open, and with a sigh and a smile, the student teacher walks into her future.
The poised and elegant student teacher only has to sit and observe on the first day, and so she is quickly shown to her seat by the reigning teacher, Mrs. D. She sits down, only to find that she cannot sit properly on this seat because it is a child's seat, meant for the 3rd and 4th graders that she will be teaching. She makes the best of the situation, and props her chin on her knees. The students begin to arrive. As her pastor's son walks in the door, he sees her and laughs. "She is here? She taught me before in Sunday School. She's funny!"
The slightly embarassed, but totally over it student teacher smiles and greets the children. Otherwise, her day is uneventfull, unless of course she remembers the glue on her skirt during craft time, the child who threw up. . . all over her brand new shoes, and the chef's suprise at lunch.
The smelly, and incredibly tired student teacher goes home after her first day of student teaching and cries, saying "Why didn't I major in Gynecology or Accounting? They would be contain so much less stress."
And so ends the day in my incredibly wild imagination. So much more could happen, or perhaps my first day will be a calm, serene event full of smiles, laughter, and happy thoughts. I'll keep you posted.
